Cancer has been leading cause of death around the world. Not only low survival rate, especially in advanced cases, but also high incidence of side effects resulting from conventional cancer treatment, including surgery, chemotherapy and radiation.

Because these problems may not be realized by public, I, as a medical doctor, have to educate the people and give them warning about possible side effects from conventional cancer treatment.

So I have collected various opinions of many international cancer experts. Hopefully it would be benefit to them before making decision for cancer treatment by conventional methods.

It is startling to discover what chemotherapy drugs are made from. The first ones were made from mustard gas exactly like the weapons that killed so many soldiers in WW I, eventually outlawed by the Geneva Conventions.

The beginning of the hype that promised to cure all cancer by means of chemo drugs, came as an offshoot of the postwar excitement with the success of antibiotics and the sulfa drugs.

Some 400,000 “cytotoxins” were tested by Sloan-Kettering and the National Cancer Institute. The criteria in order to be tested were: will the toxin kill some of the tumor cells before it kills the patient.

That’s it! Many were brand new synthetic compounds. But thousands of others were existing poisons which were simply refined. Finally about 50 drugs made the cut, and are the basis of today’s chemotherapy medicine cabinet.

One of these 50 is a sheep-deworming agent known as Levamisole. With no major clinical trial ever showing significant increased long term survival with Levamisole, it is still a standard chemotherapy agent even today!

Question: “How in the world, Dr Moss, can [chemotherapy] be considered a standard cure, when it works for 2-4 [percent of cancer patients], and very specific ones?

Answer: We are dealing with an industry. It is not supported by the facts. The way that it is done is this. The drugs are tested in test tubes, and they look for things that will kill cells.

After you have found something that kills cells, cancer cells, cell lines which are very abnormal non-typical sort of growths, maybe a new life form almost, then you put it into animals. Then if it kills the cancers before it kills the animals, and shrinks the tumours, you consider you have an active agent.

You then put it into people, and go through the 3 phases the FDA prescribes for this, and basically if you can shrink the tumour 50% or more for 28 days you have got the FDA’s definition of an active drug. That is called a response rate, so you have a response..

In the end there is no proof that chemotherapy in the vast majority of cases actually extends life, and this is the GREAT LIE about chemotherapy, that somehow there is a correlation between shrinking a tumour and extending the life of the patient. [Or that there is a correlation between looking at a cancer cell in a test tube and the tumour in someone’s body.]

In Questioning Chemotherapy, Dr. Ralph Moss talks about several of the ways they do it: Response rate is a favorite. If a dying patient’s condition changes even for a week or a month, especially if the tumor shrinks temporarily, the patient is listed as having “responded to” chemotherapy.

No joke! The fact that the tumor comes back stronger soon after chemo is stopped, is not figured into the equation. The fact that the patient has to endure horrific side effects in order to temporarily shrink the tumor is not considered. That fact that the patient soon dies is not figured into the equation. Chemotherapy and radiation do not make the body well. They destroy, they do not heal. The hope of the doctor is that the cancer will be destroyed without destroying the entire patient. These therapies do kill cancer cells, but they kill a lot of good cells too including the cells of the immune system, the very system that one NEEDS to get well.

After discussion about conventional cancer treatment failure in part1 and pathogenesis of cancer in part2, now we would discuss about herbal medicine and its role in cancer treatment.

Bioactive plant compounds of various plants have been found.

There have been many studies about molecular targets of these bioactive plant compounds. Many of them are involve in pathogenesis of cancer especially cell cycle arrest and DNA repair, the main genome maintenance mechanisms.

In western medicine, herbs would be used by extracting pure compounds. But in oriental medicine, the more holistic way, we use a cocktail of herbs in each formulation.

Function of Herbs in Formulation

The classical chinese pharmacopoeia, Shennong Materia Medica, has classified the function of herbs in formulation into 4 groups :

1. Leading group : provide major action

2. Assistant group : provide supporting action

3. Detoxified group : control any possible toxicity

4. Carrier group : provide target along meridian channel

Advantage of Herbal formulaton over Single Herb Remedy

1. More potent and more effective : herbs in leading and assistant group would work together and support each other.

2. More safe : herbs in detoxified group would detoxified any contained toxic compounds.

3. More accurate : herbs in carrier group would lead the formulation to the target.
Goal for Herbal Medicine in Cancer Treatment

1. Capable to detoxify the toxic substances from cancer cells

2. Capable to destroy cancer cells and any superimposed infection such as viral infection

3.Maintenance of normal cell proliferation and differentiation

G1 and G2 (gap 1 and gap 2) are characterized by protein and RNA synthesis, but no DNA synthesis. S (synthesis) is the period of DNA synthesis. M (mitosis) is the period when the nucleus and then the rest of the cell divides.

Genetic abnormalities  found in cancer typically affect two general classes of genes.

Cancer-promoting oncogenes are often activated in cancer cells, giving those cells new properties, such as hyperactive growth and division, protection against programmed cell death, loss of respect for normal tissue boundaries, and the ability to become established in diverse tissue environments.

Tumor suppressor genes are often inactivated in cancer cells, resulting in the loss of normal functions in those cells, such as accurate DNA replication, control over the cell cycle, orientation and adhesion within tissues, and interaction with protective cells of the immune system.

There are also many factors involve in cancer pathogenesis.

What is the Checkpoint?
The checkpoints are surveillance mechanism and quality control of the genome to maintain genomic integrity. Checkpoint failure often causes mutations and genomic arrangements resulting in genetic instability. Genetic instability is a major factor of birth defects and in the development of many diseases, most notably cancer.

Cells are constantly under the stress of intrinsic and extrinsic agents that cause DNA damage or interference with DNA replication. To cope with these assaults, cells are equipped with DNA maintenance checkpoints to arrest cell cycle and facilitate DNA repair pathways.

This image showed that there was just slightly improvement of survival rate in conventional cancer treatment in localized disease group. Anyway, in metastasis group, there was rarely improvement at all. Metastatic lung cancer (red line), for example, has 5 yrs survival rate nearly 0%.

Side Effects of Some Chemotherapy

This image showed that various drugs used in chemotherapy could cause many serious side effects. They involved many systems of our body such as bone marrow, heart, kidney and liver.

Over 75% of the oncologists polled said that if they had cancer they would never use the same chemotherapy [conventional cancer treatment’s main weapon in the “war on cancer”] they prescribe for their patients on themselves because of the ineffectiveness of chemotherapy and its unacceptable degree of toxicity.
